| CIRCUS! SCIENCE UNDER THE BIG TOP |
|
CIRCUS! Science Under the Big Top was designed and fabricated by the Ontario Science Centre. Our exhibitions strive to transform the way people see and think about the world around them. This exhibition uses science to explore the wonder of the circus and uses the world of the circus to explore science. Walk across a high wire, test your juggling skills or take a stroll down clown alley. Imagination becomes reality as our visitors observe, examine and enact the art and science of circus performances. Over 20 multi-station experiences (510 m2) immerse visitors in the illusion and reality of the circus, where they’ll discover that science is, and always has been, an integral part of “the greatest show on Earth”.

As part of your temporary exhibition programme, you may be looking to present a totally different kind of exhibition to astonish and surprise your visitors.
With the new “Cosmomania” exhibition, you’ll take them back to the great moments in space conquest, presented in their historical, scientific and social context, then speed them forward into a possible future in which they are given an opportunity to express their views, debate and play a full part in the exhibition.
Cosmomania is divided into three main areas: “History”, “Space today” and “Prospects”, and will literally plunge your visitors into daily life between the 1960’s and the year 2000 via reconstitutions of highly realistic, totally interactive interiors of the time, and will invite them into the forum to take part in a discussion about the future of space conquest.
Spectacular, with fascinating décors and content, full of anecdotes, offering a “total immersion” experience and a glimpse of the future, “Cosmomania” is a totally new type of exhibition for visitors of all ages. The very young are not forgotten: there’s a special content for them that will help them learn some “little secrets” about the great days of space conquest that only they will know. This is a highly unusual science exhibition featuring various concepts of time with diverse perspectives. Focusing on time viewed from life science, the exhibition illustrates an internal sense of time, such as DNA's body clock, and the heart beat of different animals, which questions the conventional certainty of "accurate" time. A unique collaborative work between researchers, designers, and artists results in an exhibit that draws a wide range of people, including the elusive young adult group. contact: Nahoko Ando

Heart over Heels addresses the theme of the human body. While the human body is often displayed as a functional machine in its every detail, the visitors of Heart over Heels are not shown such descriptive diagrams or charts in order to arise their awareness of the subject, but instead participate interactively in movement-based activities that lead them down the path to self-discovery. The more familiar children become with themselves and the greater their sense of self, the more deliberately and efficiently they can live their everyday lives. The children are taught a positive attitude about themselves while potential anxiety and stress are reduced and their prejudices challenged. The strong point of this exhibition is the experience and exploration of oneself and the concept of "feeling at home in the world". Questions are posed in a prearranged environment that motivates the children to find answers on their own. They are encouraged to challenge who and what they think they are, what they like and don't, or what it takes in order to feel good in their own skin.

The philosophy of the exhibition is to experience the versatility of Paper. Diversified experience-zones explain the historical development of materials to write on. Workshop-areas offer the possibility to expose the different contents on a configuring and experimental way. Basics of the cultural-historical stations are the different materials to write on and it´s production. The most important elements of figuration and a red line through the cultural-history are different silver-coloured cylinders - partly to walk in, which refer to the different epochs of paper-production. At each of the 6 stations the paper-explorers get a worksheet, which visually looks like the explained material. The sheets contain the preparations of the most important information in terms of texts, comics, work-items and instructions to handicraft. To design the worksheets they go to the according working-areas. The working-areas are equipped in a way that the children are able to fill in and decorate their worksheets all by themselves. At the end of the exhibition the children bind their 11 collected sheets or digitalize them at the station "bookbinding" to receive their own little museums-booklet, a worthwhile memory of the exhibition "Papier La Papp".
